Introduction to Philosophy of Language is a textbook written by Innocent Ngangah and Duve Nakolisa on the academic study of the nature and meaning of language from mainly philosophical and partly linguistic points of view. The book deals with how meaning is referenced and contextualized and how the semantic implication of natural languages elucidates our reading of philosophical texts and our methodical application of philosophical logic.
Topics covered by the book include history of philosophy of language, concept and theories of meaning, concept of reference (including Fregean semantics), theories of description (including Russell’s), speech acts, picture theory of language and private language argument (including Wittgenstein’s concept of the latter).
There are study questions at the end of every chapter of the book; students using the text in their formal study will find the questions very helpful.
